CES 2018 voice control is THE trend

January 10, 2018, By Jennifer Colegrove Ph.D. Touch Display Research Inc.

I’m at the raining Las Vegas for the CES 2018. (Rain is very rare at Las Vegas, but rain is good for this region. But it sure caused slow traffic.) Today is the first day of the exhibition, while yesterday was a whole day of press conferences.

Clearly, voice control/voice recognition is the number one trend of this year.

  • Yesterday, at Samsung’s press conference Samsung emphasized their voice control to be integrated to their refrigerator with a huge touch display, to make it into integrated family hub.
  • Faurecia’s press conference announced to partner with Amazon Alexa to bring the voice command experience from living room to cars.
  • Over 40 smart speakers are already in the market or announced.

In the recently published “Voice Command, Voice Translator, Smart Speaker Technologies, Supply Chain and Market Forecast 2017 Report,” Touch Display Research forecasts the overall voice recognition market will grow to $43 billion in 2024.

HP is the earlier adopter of active pen. Its TouchSmart 12.1” NB PCs has adopted N-trig’s DuoSense active pen technology around 2009. HP is the company which has tried many types of active pens in the past 8 years.

Fourteen major brands’ adoption of active pen is analyzed in the Active pen 2017 report.

About 4 months ago, Apple just announced two new iPad Pro: the 10.5 inch version and the 12.9 inch version with active pens.

The active pen industry landscape has changed dramatically in the recent 3 years: Companies actively working on active pens has increased from 60 companies in 2014 to over 120 companies in 2017. These over 120 companies’ profiles are in the excel database. The strengths and weaknesses of key players are analyzed in this report.

The Active Pen 2017 Report provides the detail pen technologies analysis of 21 types of pen: 13 active pen and 8 passive pens.

There is no perfect active pen yet in the market. The 10 key characters of an ideal active pen are analyzed in chapter 8. This report provides not only the outlook for active pen and penetration in touch devices, but also provide Bill of Material (BOM) analysis of active pen module for “pen only” and “pen and finger” touch in chapter 7.

Over 100 devices with active pen are compared side by side with pen technologies and pen suppliers in the excel database.

Touch Display Research forecasted the active pen market will grow rapidly in the next several years.

SID Vehicle Display 2017 Conference had record high attendees

October 3, 2017.  By Jennifer Colegrove Ph.D.

I just returned from the SID Vehicle Display and Interface 2017 conference in Detroit, Michigan. It was my honor to meet some of you in person.

This year’s conference had record high attendees—approximately 500 industry professionals. I recall when I spoke at this conference about 10 years ago regarding touch screen, there were approximately 100 attendees. This growth is another reflection of the automotive industry’s adoption of advanced technologies.

Dr. Thomas Seder, GM Technical Fellow & Chief Technologist-HMI at General Motors, gave a Keynote speech titled “Augmented Reality System Architecture, Supporting Technologies and HMI Requirements” on September 26th.

USA Today quoted Touch Display Research about Apple iPhone X flexible OLED display

September 29, 2017.  By Jennifer Colegrove Ph.D., Touch Display Research Inc.

USA Today published an article about “Why you’ll need to wait seven weeks for iPhone X to go on sale”, the authors are Mr. Jon Swartz and Mr. Mike Snider. The article quoted Touch Display Research about OLED market and how Apple used the flexible OLED.

“Samsung and LG alone plan to invest about $20 billion in OLED production in the next few years, and Apple will likely make its own investments, says Jennifer Colegrove, principal analyst at Touch Display Research in Santa Clara, Calif.”

“The display for Apple’s iPhone X uses a flexible OLED display so that it can bend at the edges, helping increase the functional screen to more than 90%.”

As we forecasted about 2 years ago, in the “Touch and Emerging Display December 2015 report”, also in the CNBC article by Anita Balakrishnan which quoted Touch Display Research, “Touch Display Research forecasted Apple will adopt AMOLED for iPhone in 2017/2018 time frame. The current global AMOLED capacity is not enough to support Apple iPhone. That’s why we estimate the adoption to occur in the 2017/2018 time frame. Touch Display Research believes the investment on OLED fab-capacity-expansion from LG and Samsung will soon materialize.”

Now our forecast became reality. Sorry about tooting our own horn, but these are the facts. We are good at forecast.

Apple confirmed flexible AMOLED for iPhone X today

Sept 12th, 2017, By Jennifer Colegrove Ph.D., CEO and Principal Analyst at Touch Display Research Inc.

On September 12, 2017, Apple announced the highly anticipated new iPhones: iPhone X, iPhone 8, and iPhone 8 plus. The iPhone X is the most expensive one among all three, since it uses a 5.8-inch flexible AMOLED display, while the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 plus use the main stream LCD.

Apple likes the benefits of flexible AMOLED displays: thinness, light weight, potentially low power, and curved form factor for almost edge-less design.

Figure 1: Apple announced iPhone X

As we forecasted about 2 years ago, in the “Touch and Emerging Display December 2015 report”, also in the CNBC article by Anita Balakrishnan which quoted Touch Display Research, “Touch Display Research forecasted Apple will adopt AMOLED for iPhone in 2017/2018 time frame. Now our forecast became reality. Sorry about tooting our own horn, but these are the facts. We are good at forecast.

We also accurately forecasted 4K OLED TV available time, 2 years ahead. On Jan 25, 2013 press release, we announced that “Touch Display Research forecast Ultra HD (4K) resolution AMOLED TV will be on the market by 2015”. “Although AMOLED with FHD resolution is available currently, 4K is considered the high end for TV resolution, even though 4K content is still limited,” said Dr. Jennifer Colegrove, President and analyst at Touch Display Research. “56-inch 4K resolution is just 79 ppi (pixel per inch), which is easily achievable. The challenges are how to increase yield, have good uniformity, have long lifetime, and reduce the manufacturing cost.”

LG’s 65” 4K OLED TV became commercially available in Q1 2015, our forecast becomes reality in 2 years.

Touch Display Research has a good reputation of accurate forecast.

In the “Touch and Emerging Display report”, June 2013 issue, page 45, Touch Display Research forecasted “Apple will adopt AMOLED within 18 months”.

With the Apple Watch announced in Sept 2014 (available since April 2015), our forecast becomes reality in 18 months.
