CES 2016 what to expect

First of all, on behalf of Touch Display Research Inc., we wish you a Happy New Year.

In early January, I’ll travel to Las Vegas for CES 2016. At CES, we expect to see:

  1. Flexible or transparent OLED digital signage from LG and Samsung. In the “Flexible OLED display technologies, supply chain and market forecast 2015 report”, Touch Display Research analyzes flexible OLED display technologies, manufacturing process, other competing technologies, and shows the flexible OLED display had attracted over 180 companies and research institutes.

  1. We’ll see Quantum Dot displays from most OEMs at CES 2016. In the “Quantum Dot Display and Lighting Technologies and Market Forecast 2015 Report” Second Edition, Touch Display Research forecasts that the quantum dot display and lighting component market will surpass $2 billion by 2016 and reach $10.6 billion by 2025. This report profiles over sixty companies working on quantum dot materials and quantum dot components.

  1. Augmented reality and virtual reality with touch and touchless sensors. In the newly published “Touchless Human-Machine Interaction Sensor Market 2015 Report,” Second Edition, Touch Display Research forecast gesture control, voice recognition, and other Touchless HMI sensor market will reach $44 Billion by 2021.

SID 2014: quantum dot

Yesterday, we discussed this year SID DisplayWeek’s No. 1 trend: ITO-replacement.
Here we discuss about the No. 2 trend: quantum dot.
Over 10 companies showed quantum dot at SID 2014. Some are in the exhibition floor; some showed us through invitation-only meetings.
Touch Display Research was invited to Dow and Nanoco’s meeting in Marriott Marquis hotel on June 2, 2014. I had a chance to meet Mr. Lee, Director of Dow Electric Material. Dow has signed exclusive contract with Nanoco to mass produce its Cadmium-free quantum dot in 2012. Since 2012, Dow’s investment in engineering has further fine-tuned Nanoco’s Cd-free quantum dot technology.

At SID 2014, 3M and Nanosys announced their QDEF design-win on ASUS’s notebook PC.
Quantum dot could improve Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) dramatically in terms of color gamut, color accuracy and reducing power consumption. This is one of the biggest breakthrough technologies for LCD in recent several years. Now quantum dot LCD is challenging AMOLED.
In Touch Display Research’s recently published “Quantum dot display and lighting technologies and market forecast” report, we surveyed many quantum dot suppliers and found that the quantum dot display component market already surpassed $70 million in 2013. Over 30 companies are working on quantum dot display. We forecast that the quantum dot display and lighting component market will expand to $508 million in 2014, and reach $9.6 billion by 2023.

Kent Displays’ successful story

I’m traveling in northern Ohio this week to speak at the FlexTech Alliance workshop. It’s good to be back in Ohio, since I got my Ph.D. from Kent State University in Ohio 14 years ago. Ohio is like my second home.
Kent Displays invited me to visit them during this trip. Right when I entered Kent Displays’ company lobby, there is a digital signage in the lobby, showing the message, “Welcome, Jennifer Colegrove, Enjoy your day.” I felt very special and took a picture of it. See figure here.

The digital signage is using Kent Displays’ bi-stable LCD, which is called “zero power” display. The display doesn’t consume any power when showing a static image; only consume power when you change the image. It is operated with battery; no power plug needed.
I had a meeting with my old industry friends: Dr. Green, CEO of Kent Displays, and Dr. Khan, CTO of Kent Displays, and Mr. Oswald, communication director of Kent Displays. I also had a tour of their factory and discovered their success story of the Boogie Board.
Kent Displays make the Boogie Board from the flexible display to the final shipping box of the Boogie Board. In another words, they do the whole supply chain. Dr. Khan said, “In some sense, we are doing more than Apple.” That is a good comparison and its true. Apple doesn’t make the displays; rather they purchase the displays from LG, Samsung, Sharp, AUO, Japan Display, etc.

Electronic Display Conference (eDC 2014) in Germany

February 27, 2014

I’m traveling in the beautiful Nuremburg, Germany for electronic Display Conference (eDC) 2014. Even though it’s raining today, the conference still had over 260 attendees.

In the touch session in the morning, Dr. Roland Aubauer from Microchip Technology discussed 3D gesture touch controller they developed. Mr. Bob Raikes, from Meko (also my industry friend) gave a presentation titled “Just because touch works on a phone, it’s not always the answer”. He jokingly suggested the PC should add a foot pedal, so like driving a car, we can use our foot to do left click or right click. Even that is a joke, but he does have a good point: besides finger touch, there are many other methods to do machine-human user interface.

At the keynote session, Dr. Jyrki Kimmel from Nokia could not come in person, so he gave the keynote about displays in the mobile ecosystem on the telephone, while the conference chairman Professor Doctor Blankenbach helped to click through the slides.  It went well.

Then on behalf of Touch Display Research, I gave a keynote on the touch screen and emerging display market. I first thanked the conference organizer and our sponsor company Data Modul. I then discussed 7 new opportunities in the touch and display market: phablet, NB and AIO PC with touch, ITO-replacement, flexible and curved display, active pen, touchless control, and quantum dot.

At the end, Mrs. Sweta Dash from IHS gave a keynote about top 10 display trends for 2014 and beyond.

The conference ended at around 4:20pm very successfully. Attendees were still lingering around for networking.

Plastic Logic and Novaled OTFT backplane AMOLED

I just came back from the 2014 FLEX conference and the SID LA Symposium. There are many highlights in these 2 conferences. One of the exciting news is about the Organic TFT (OTFT) backplane AMOLED.

On Feb 6th, 2014, Plastic Logic’s director of research and partnerships, Mr. Mike Banach gave a presentation titled “A New Frontier for Flexible Displays”. At the same day, both Plastic Logic and Novaled announced their partnership and their demo of OTFT backplane AMOLED.

Their demo is a monochrome flexible AMOLED, targeting for wearable applications. Plastic Logic’s CEO, Indro Mukerjee, said, “2014 will be the year that wearable technology starts to go mainstream.”

Touch Display Research analyst agrees with that. Touch Display Research forecasts 30 million units flexible and curved displays will be shipped for smart watch application by 2023. Overall flexible and curved display market will reach $27 Billion by 2023.

It is said Merck’s organic semiconductor material was used in the OTFT prototype.

As we covered in our “Flexible and Curved Display and Lighting Technologies and Market Forecast” report, Sony has demonstrated OTFT backplane AMOLED before.

CES 2014 What to Expect

I’ll travel to International CES 2014 in Las Vegas in early January. CES is one of the most crowded consumer electronic shows in the world with over 150,000 attendees.

Here are what to expect:

  1. OLED display. We expect Samsung and LG will demo large size AMOLED TV at CES 2014, just as they did in last year. But this time it’ll be one level higher: we expect to see 4K and larger size. Other companies, such as Sony, AUO, Panasonic will also demo 4K OLED TV.

Touch Display Research forecasts that by 2020 the OLED TV market will reach $15.5 billion. 2016 will be the takeoff year for OLED TVs with billions of dollars of revenue each year after that.

2. 8K display. We expect to see 8K display at CES 2014. More analysis can be found in our “Touch and Emerging Display report” December 2013 report.

3. Quantum dot is adopted in LCD to improve color gamut and reduce power consumption.  At CES 2014, we’ll see Sony’s Triluminos TV with quantum dot from QD Vision.  We might also see Hisense demo quantum dot TV as well.

4. We’ll also see many flexible/curved display at CES 2014, such as curved OLED TV, curved LCD TV, curved smart watches, wearable devices.

Overall flexible and curved display market will reach $27 Billion by 2023.

5. ITO-replacement. At CES 2014, we’ll see many touch screen devices, from mobile phone to large public signage. ITO-replacement transparent conductor is penetrating to touch screens very rapidly. ITO-replacement attracted over 200 companies and research Institutes. We expect to see metal mesh, silver nanowire and other ITO-replacement touch panels at the show.

Touch Display Research forecasts the non-ITO transparent conductor market will grow from $206 million in 2013 to $4 billion by 2020.

Have a safe and healthy holiday

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you!

When I was having tea with an industry friend in Silicon Valley recently, I told him I flew about 100,000 miles this year.  He said he flew 150,000 miles. He beats me!

Frequent flyer is fine, but please don’t do the extreme like I did a couple of years ago. I first had a one-week business trip to Asia, then back to home in US for 2 days, and then I flew to Europe for another business trip.  My body started to be confused about the time, “Is it sleeping time or is it wakes up time?” Eventually, I became sick in Europe.

Although the modern technologies have offered fast and easy travel: we can take the inter-continental airplane, we can take bullet train, but our body is still the “ancient” body like our ancestors thousands of years ago.

So, take good care, especially if you have to travel, wish you a safe and healthy holiday!
