CES 2018 voice control is THE trend

January 10, 2018, By Jennifer Colegrove Ph.D. Touch Display Research Inc.

I’m at the raining Las Vegas for the CES 2018. (Rain is very rare at Las Vegas, but rain is good for this region. But it sure caused slow traffic.) Today is the first day of the exhibition, while yesterday was a whole day of press conferences.

Clearly, voice control/voice recognition is the number one trend of this year.

  • Yesterday, at Samsung’s press conference Samsung emphasized their voice control to be integrated to their refrigerator with a huge touch display, to make it into integrated family hub.
  • Faurecia’s press conference announced to partner with Amazon Alexa to bring the voice command experience from living room to cars.
  • Over 40 smart speakers are already in the market or announced.

In the recently published “Voice Command, Voice Translator, Smart Speaker Technologies, Supply Chain and Market Forecast 2017 Report,” Touch Display Research forecasts the overall voice recognition market will grow to $43 billion in 2024.

SID Vehicle Display 2017 Conference had record high attendees

October 3, 2017.  By Jennifer Colegrove Ph.D.

I just returned from the SID Vehicle Display and Interface 2017 conference in Detroit, Michigan. It was my honor to meet some of you in person.

This year’s conference had record high attendees—approximately 500 industry professionals. I recall when I spoke at this conference about 10 years ago regarding touch screen, there were approximately 100 attendees. This growth is another reflection of the automotive industry’s adoption of advanced technologies.

Dr. Thomas Seder, GM Technical Fellow & Chief Technologist-HMI at General Motors, gave a Keynote speech titled “Augmented Reality System Architecture, Supporting Technologies and HMI Requirements” on September 26th.

July 13th, 2017, By Jennifer Colegrove Ph.D., CEO and Principal Analyst at Touch Display Research Inc.
Recently, Rumors hold that Apple has acquired Germany-based eye-tracking company SensoMotoric Instruments (SMI). Neither Apple, nor SMI has announced anything yet.

AR, VR, and AI are the next big things. Apple, Google, Microsoft, Amazon, Samsung, LG, Intel, Qualcomm, Facebook are all working on these technologies.

Although Apple hasn’t announce any AR/VR product yet, Touch Display Research forecasts that Apple will release augmented reality (AR) devices in the 2017/2018 time frame.

In 2017, Apple acquired eye-tracking company SMI.

Sensors

There are over 20 types of sensor technologies are used for augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), and artificial intelligence (AI) applications. We organized them into 10 categories: touch sensor and touch pad, camera-based gesture control, ultrasound and radar based gesture control, eye tracking, voice recognition, photodiode sensors, proximity touch screen, motion sensor, short-range wireless and other touchless technologies.

SID 2016 Monday Seminar: from mainstream to emerging display

May 25, 2016

SID 2016 DisplayWeek is held in San Francisco, California this week. I taught a seminar on Monday morning, titled “Display Market Forecast –LCD, OLED, e-paper and touch, from main stream to emerging display”.

I’m honored to have been teaching Monday Seminar for 3 years at SID DisplayWeek. According to the conference organizer, there are over 600 attendees for the Monday seminar this year, which is a record high in SID history.

During the 90-min seminar, I first listed the hot trends in display industry in 2016 and 2017. Then I provided the global display industry market forecast to 2026. The overall display industry growth is slowing down but there are hot trends in many areas. Then I discuss the new opportunities in display market:  quantum dot display, flexible and curved LCD display, high resolution, OLED display, e-paper display, embedded touch screen, active pen and touchless human-machine-interaction sensors.

Figure: Dr. Colegrove taught Monday Seminar at SID 2016 DisplayWeek.

More and more people joined the seminar, many of them had to stand for the one and half an hour seminar. From the questions the attendee asked at the Q&A session, I believe many people are interested in 3 areas: quantum dot, flexible display, touch screen.

More analysis can be found in the “Quantum dot 2016 report”, “Flexible, curved and foldable display report”, Touch and Emerging Display monthly report, June 2016 issue.

For those audiences who has given me your name cards, I’ll send you one monthly report– “Touch and Emerging Display report”– for free next week.
