UV.eb West 2017 Conference is very successful

March 1, 2017

I just returned from the UV.eb (ultra violet, electron beam) West 2017 conference hosted by Radtech, at the beautiful Embassy Suites San Francisco Airport Waterfront, in California. It was very successful with over 200 attendees.

VP of business development at Colorado Photopolymer Solutions, Dr. Mike Idacavage gave a speech about development and characterization of materials for UV curable 3D printing systems.

C3Nano raised $37 million—value in the ITO replacement

Recently, C3Nano just announced it has raised $15 million in equity financing, this brings their total equity financing to $37 million since its 2010 inception.

ITO (Indium Tin Oxide) used to be the main stream transparent conductive material for touch screens. However, in recently several years, other advanced transparent conductive materials, such as metal mesh, silver nanowire, carbon nano tube (CNT), conductive polymer, are replacing ITO.

In the recently published “ITO Replacement—Non-ITO Transparent Conductor Technologies, Supply Chain and Market Forecast 2017 Report,” Touch Display Research profiled over 300 companies and research institutes working on advanced transparent conductive (TC) materials.

Our survey found that the ITO-replacement industry had a shake out. Some suppliers ceased business or changed method. Some suppliers who had improved their quality and expanded to large sizes, are expanding to more markets. Touch Display Research forecasted that non-ITO transparent conductors will have rapid growth in the next several years.

TCL quantum dot on chip

February 14, 2017

Quantum dot technology could improve Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) dramatically in terms of color gamut, color accuracy and reducing power consumption.

At CES 2017, I attended TCL’s press conference. TCL announced that “Coming soon, world’s slimmest QD curved TV 3.9mm”, and “TCL will release world’s first QD on LED-chip TV”. Those are very exciting news, but TCL didn’t say exactly when.

What other form factors could quantum dot be used? What are the Pros and Cons? Which form factor QD will be dominant in 2027?

I just returned from the SID Los Angeles chapter’s 2017 one-day Conference, at the beautiful Costa Mesa Golf Course, in California.

Tesla will use more than 21 sensors for advanced driver assistant system

This week, Tesla announced that all Tesla vehicles produced in their factory – including Model 3 – will have the improved sensors for full self-driving capability.

Beginning with vehicles manufactured in late 2014, all new Tesla Model S vehicles come equipped with a camera mounted at the top of the windshield, forward looking radar, and ultrasonic sensors in the front and rear bumpers.

Triggered by the deadly accident in this May, Tesla’s CEO, Mr. Elon Musk, indicated that Tesla will update the Autopilot in end of September/early October to Autopilot 8.0. They’ll change the camera-as-the-primary-technology ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistant System) to radar-as-the-primary-technology ADAS.

Touch Display Research believes Tesla’s radar-as-the-primary ADAS still needs camera in it, since radar can’t detect the traffic light color, nor pained lines for lanes. Camera is still necessary in the ADAS.

This week, Tesla announced they’ll integrate more than 21 sensors for their cars:  8 surround cameras provide 360 degree visibility around the car. 12 updated ultrasonic sensors complement this vision, allowing for detection of both hard and soft objects. A forward-facing radar with enhanced processing capable of seeing through heavy rain, fog, dust and even the car ahead.

To process all the data collected from the 21 sensors, Tesla also upgraded their new onboard computer with more than 40 times the computing power of the previous generation.

The automotive industry’s adoption of new technologies has accelerated in the past couples of years. ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistant Systems) includes many features. The top 3 most popular/critical features are automatic emergency braking, pre-collision warning, and blind-spot warning.

In the recently published “Automotive touch, display, ADAS and touchless HMI 2016 report,” Touch Display Research Inc., a market research and consulting firm, analyzes automotive touch screen, display, ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistant System), and touchless human-machine-interaction (HMI).

Touch Display Research forecasts the overall automotive touch, display, ADAS and touchless HMI market will grow from $15 billion in 2017, to $60 billion in 2023.

Currently ADAS feature is optional in many high-end cars, and we believe it will quickly become a must for many new buyer. By 2022, ADAS will become standard in most American cars. The $60 billion opportunity will be gobbled by over 500 companies, which include approximately 100 automotive companies, approximately 200 touch screen companies, over 200 touchless human-machine-interaction (HMI) companies and approximately 30 display companies.

SEMI FLEX Singapore 2016 Conference is very successful

I just returned from the SEMI FLEX Southeast Asia 2016 Conference, at the beautiful Marina Bay Sands in Singapore. It’s a very successful conference with all seats sold out several days before. This is my first time to visit Singapore. It’s my honor to meet some of you in person.

Automotive company Faurecia Invests in Canatu

September 30, 2016

Last month, Canatu announced it received 22 million Euros funding. One of the new significant investor is an automotive company.

Today, Canatu announced that automotive investor is Faurecia.

Faurecia is a France-headquartered automotive system integrator with 103K employees, and 21 billion Euro revenue in 2015. Faurecia has three Business Groups: Automotive Seating, Emissions Control Technologies, and Interior Systems.

“Touch is a very natural and intuitive way of interacting and will become ubiquitous in the car interior. We are proud to have our CNB Film to be a key enabler in bringing Faurecia’s visions of Smart Surfaces and Intuitive Connectivity into life”, says the new CEO Juha Kokkonen from Canatu.

“This is an important step in the evolution of our interior systems offering towards the move to smart surfaces, driven by the fusion between electronics and surface decorations. Coupling Faurecia’s position as Lead Architect of a new Customer Experience and Canatu’s unique CNB films, we are convinced that the combination will rapidly offer automotive-level solutions tailored to end-consumers’ advanced needs” explains Mr. David Weill, VP Marketing and Business Development at Faurecia Interior Systems.
