Touch panels, flexible/curved/foldable display, smart windows, quantum dots are hot topics at SID 2017

May 27, 2017, by Jennifer Colegrove Ph.D.

I just returned from SID DisplayWeek 2017 in the beautiful Log Angeles, California. It was my honor to meet some of you in person.

Touch panels, flexible/curved/foldable display, smart windows, quantum dots are hot topics at SID 2017. Each of these fields has some as expected, and also has some surprises.

How many smart windows technologies are there? What’s the Pros and Cons of each type? Which company is investing in which? In the recently published “Smart Windows Transparent Switchable Technologies, Supply Chain and Market Forecast 2017 Report,” Touch Display Research Inc., analyzed 19 smart window technologies, which include 16 active smart window technologies and 3 passive smart window technologies. Some can be both active and passive. More than 130 companies working on smart window technologies are profiled in the report.

What are the surprises of each hot topic? More analysis of SID 2017 can be found in the “Touch and Emerging Display” monthly report.

TCL quantum dot on chip

February 14, 2017

Quantum dot technology could improve Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) dramatically in terms of color gamut, color accuracy and reducing power consumption.

At CES 2017, I attended TCL’s press conference. TCL announced that “Coming soon, world’s slimmest QD curved TV 3.9mm”, and “TCL will release world’s first QD on LED-chip TV”. Those are very exciting news, but TCL didn’t say exactly when.

What other form factors could quantum dot be used? What are the Pros and Cons? Which form factor QD will be dominant in 2027?

Besides display, what other market will QD flourish in the next several years?

The answers are in the recently published “Quantum dot 2017 report”, 4th edition.

Why Samsung wants to acquire QD Vision

By Jennifer Colegrove Ph.D., November 30, 2016,

Recently, Korea media reported that Samsung confirmed that it is acquiring QD Vision. The confirmation comes from the head of Samsung’s Advanced Institute of Technology Jung Chil-hee. There is no words about the financial detail, but rumors hold Samsung will pay about $70 million.

Touch Display Research believes quantum dot technology is one of the biggest breakthrough technologies for LCD in recent several years. Now quantum dot LCD is challenging AMOLED (Active Matrix Organic Light Emitting Diode).

The number of companies working on quantum dot has increase from 60 in 2015 to over 80 in 2016.

International Liquid Crystal Conference 2016 Review

August 4, 2016

I just returned from the International Liquid Crystal Conference (ILCC) 2016. I’m honored to be invited to give a presentation at this conference, and especially at Kent State University, which is my home University.

Figure 1: Kent Student Centers

Kent State University has changed a lot since I graduated with a Ph.D. in the year 2000. Many science buildings and dormitory buildings have been added. The Kent Student Center, the Library and the plaza in between had been remodeled.

The ILCC is very successful with about 700 attendees this year. It is the largest academic meeting in the field of liquid crystals, held biennially under the auspices of the International Liquid Crystal Society.

Quantum dot is a hot topic in this year’s ILCC. In my presentation about display market, I discussed several new opportunities:  flexible and curved displays, and quantum dot displays.

Nanoco signed quantum dot license with Wah Hong

July 22, 2016

Today, Nanoco, a world leader in the development and manufacture of cadmium-free quantum dots and other nanomaterials, announced a good news—it signed a seven-year supply and licensing agreement to supply Cadmium-free quantum dot to Wah Hong Industrial Corporation. Wah Hong is a leading Taiwanese manufacturer and supplier of optical films.

Quantum dot market has been growing rapidly in recent couple of years. Just 2 months ago, Nanosys announced that Hitachi Chemical and Nanosys have partnered in the development of QDEF (quantum dot enhancement film) for display applications. Hitachi Chemical plans to begin shipping QDEF in mass production volumes during the 2nd half of 2016.

In the recently published “Quantum Dot Display and Lighting Technologies and Market Forecast Report (Third Edition),” Touch Display Research surveyed many quantum dot suppliers, display manufacturers and OEMs, and analyzed and forecasted the quantum dot display component market with detail of material type and form factor. This report profiles over 80 companies working on quantum dot materials and quantum dot components. Touch Display Research forecasts the overall QD display component and lighting and QLED market will surpass $2 billion by 2017, and reach $10.8 billion by 2026.

“Quantum dot technology could improve Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) dramatically in terms of color gamut, color accuracy and reducing power consumption. The number of companies working on quantum dot has increased to over 80 in 2016 from just 60 companies in 2015,” said Dr. Jennifer Colegrove, CEO and principal analyst of Touch Display Research Inc. “We forecast quantum dot components will have a rapid penetration into displays and lighting from 2016 to 2026.”

The report provides market forecast with a detailed breakdown by Cadmium-type quantum dot and Cd-free quantum dot.

The “Quantum Dot Display and Lighting Technologies and Market Forecast Report” Third Edition is available immediately and includes a PowerPoint file of over 290 pages and an Excel database.

A license for less than five users is $3800 for this report. The license for five or more users is $4800.

Quantum dots making big progress at SID 2016

May 27, 2016

At SID 2016 DisplayWeek, quantum dot is continued to be hot topic, even hotter than last year.(see our blog about last year’s SID).

Nanosys announced two good news. Nanosys announced that Hitachi Chemical and Nanosys have partnered in the development of QDEF (quantum dot enhancement film) for display applications. Hitachi Chemical plans to begin shipping QDEF in mass production volumes during the 2nd half of 2016.

Nanosys also announced a breakthrough quantum dot film—Hyperion. Hyperion Quantum Dots have Cadmium in it, but very little, below 90 ppm. In the European Union’s Restriction on Hazardous Substances (RoHS) Directive, it requests any component with Cadmium must be <100 ppm (which is 0.01%). RoHS never requests Cd-free. Now, Hyperion QDs meet this requirement, so it doesn’t need to request exemption. Touch Display Research believes this is very clever. How is Hyperion’s performance? More analysis of Hyperion can be found in the Touch and Emerging Display monthly report.

QD Vision also showed TVs with Color IQ and new TPV’s AOC brand monitors with Color IQ in them. Three new quantum dot companies had shown Touch Display Research their QD samples recently.

In the recently published “Quantum Dot 2016 Report (Third Edition),” Touch Display Research surveyed many quantum dot suppliers, display manufacturers and OEMs, and analyzed and forecasted the quantum dot display component market with detail of material type and form factor. This report profiles over 80 companies working on quantum dot materials and quantum dot components. Touch Display Research forecasts the overall QD display component and lighting and QLED market will surpass $2 billion by 2017, and reach $10.8 billion by 2026.
