How many smart windows technologies are there? What’s the Pros and Cons of each type? Which company is investing in which? In the recently published “Smart Windows Transparent Switchable Technologies, Supply Chain and Market Forecast 2017 Report,” Touch Display Research Inc., analyzed 19 smart window technologies, which include 16 active smart window technologies and 3 passive smart window technologies. Some can be both active and passive. More than 130 companies working on smart window technologies are profiled in the report.

What are the surprises of each hot topic? More analysis of SID 2017 can be found in the “Touch and Emerging Display” monthly report.

Cisco’s Spark Board touch screen is using ITO-replacement

March 7, 2017

Microsoft’s Surface Hub brought interactive whiteboard to a higher level last year.

In October 2016, Google announced it will release 55 inch Jamboard interactive whiteboard to the market in 2017 to compete with Surface Hub. But the Jamboard is still not available yet at this moment.

On January 24th, 2017, Cisco announced its Spark Board and joined the competition. Cisco is moving faster than Google: the Spark Board became available in end of January. People can purchase the 55 inch Spark Board right now for $4990 plus a monthly fee of $199. Cisco will release a 70” version in end of this year for $9,990.

Touch Display Research believes the Spark Board touch sensor is using metal mesh or silver nanowire transparent conductors.

In the ITO Replacement—Non-ITO Transparent Conductor Technologies, Supply Chain and Market Forecast 2017 Report, seventh edition, Touch Display Research profiled over 300 companies and research institutes working on advanced transparent conductive (TC) materials. The report provides a detailed analysis of metal mesh, silver nanowire, carbon nano tube (CNT), conductive polymer, graphene, and other technologies.

C3Nano raised $37 million—value in the ITO replacement

Feb 27, 2017

Recently, C3Nano just announced it has raised $15 million in equity financing, this brings their total equity financing to $37 million since its 2010 inception.

ITO (Indium Tin Oxide) used to be the main stream transparent conductive material for touch screens. However, in recently several years, other advanced transparent conductive materials, such as metal mesh, silver nanowire, carbon nano tube (CNT), conductive polymer, are replacing ITO.

In the recently published “ITO Replacement—Non-ITO Transparent Conductor Technologies, Supply Chain and Market Forecast 2017 Report,” Touch Display Research profiled over 300 companies and research institutes working on advanced transparent conductive (TC) materials.

Figure: ITO replacement 2017 report

Our survey found that the ITO-replacement industry had a shake out. Some suppliers ceased business or changed method. Some suppliers who had improved their quality and expanded to large sizes, are expanding to more markets. Touch Display Research forecasted that non-ITO transparent conductors will have rapid growth in the next several years.

The “ITO-replacement Technologies and Market Forecast 2017 Report” Seventh Edition is available immediately.

Universal Stylus Initiative’s impact on active pen market

September 22, 2016

Today Universal Stylus Initiative (USI) just announced its breakthrough Specification 1.0.

Launched in 2015, Universal Stylus Initiative (USI) is an international not-for-profit technology trade association whose mission is to define industry-wide standards for interoperable communication between an active stylus and touch-enabled devices such as phones, tablets, and computing and entertainment platforms. Currently, it has 34 member companies.

The USI 1.0 Specification defines a standard signaling mechanism and communication protocol between a stylus and a touch-enabled device. Users will be able to use a single USI Stylus across all of their USI-enabled devices and any USI stylus shipped with devices will work with other USI-enabled devices, even those from different manufacturers. This is a breakthrough capability and industry-first enabled by the USI 1.0 Specification.

Touch Display Research had a chance to interview Mr. Pete Mueller, Chairman of USI and Principal Engineer/Senior Technologist at Intel, about the USI spec 1.0. We asked when we can expect to see the first commercially available active pen that is USI compatible. He replied that will be end of 2017 or early 2018, since the OEMs and silicon foundries need at least 1 year after seeing the specification to plan it into their roadmap.

In USI’s press release, it quoted Touch Display Research’s market forecast, “Touch Display Research predicts that active-stylus market revenue will double from nearly $3B in 2016 to almost $6B over the next four years.”

Figure: Active Pen Market forecast to 2021

Active pen market forecast 2016

More analysis of the USI’s impact on the active pen industry, and over 100 active pen and passive pen companies’ profiles can be found in the “Active pen 2016 report”.

Thirteen types of active pen and eight types passive pen are analyzed in the report. The Active pen 2016 report includes a PowerPoint file of over 270 pages and an Excel database.
