CES 2019: Flexible Display and Flexible Touch

Jan 26th, 2019, by Jennifer Colegrove, Ph.D., CEO and Principal Analyst, Touch Display Research

(This article is an abstract from the “Touch and Emerging Display monthly report, CES 2019 special report”. For the full analysist and report, you can subscribe here in the Market Research Report page.)

I just returned from CES 2019 at Las Vegas. It’s my honor to meet some of you in person. CES is the conference where many consumer electronic brands show case their most advanced technologies and the conference that set the trends for the near future.

At CES 2019, competition between manufacturers of flexible/foldable AMOLED display devices is heating up.

At CES 2019, Royole demonstrated the FlexPai. It features a 7.8” foldable AMOLED display with 1920×1440 pixel format, 308 ppi resolution. I had a hand on with the device and bend it. The device can only be bent backwards away from the display. When I tried to bend it inward, the mechanical structure would forbidden it, which can protect their flexible AMOLED. The device is actually light weight.

Royole took the 7.8” flexible AMOLED and used it into several other applications: a hat with the display, a T-shirt with the display, and even a purse with the display on it. The battery is hidden in the hat, or the purse. The hat and T-shirt are available for $899 each. The purse is a prototype and they hope a famous brand will adopt the technology.

In the Flexible Display and Flexible Touch 2018 Report, 3rd edition, Touch Display Research analyzed over 270 companies working on flexible display and flexible touch screens. Touch Display Research forecasted flexible, curved and foldable display will have over $75 billion revenue, which will be about 36% market share in 2027.

What is TCL’s new strategy for 2019? What is Samsung’s new strategy for 2019?

Which other startup companies are showing promising new technologies?

All these are covered in the recently published Touch and Emerging Display monthly report: CES 2019 special report.

SID Vehicle Display and Interface 2018 conference review

September 29, 2018, by Jennifer Colegrove Ph.D. Principal Analyst, Touch Display Research Inc.

I just returned from the SID Vehicle Display and Interface 2018 conference in Detroit, Michigan. It was my honor to meet some of you in person.

This year’s conference had record high attendees—approximately 500 industry professionals. I recall when I spoke at this conference about 10 years ago regarding touch screen, there were approximately 100 attendees. This growth is another reflection of the automotive industry’s adoption of advanced technologies.

Mr. Silviu Pala, co-chair of this conference, and CEO of Automotive Display, gave a summary presentation of the 25th years history of this Vehicle Display conference.

Interview Plastic Logic’s CEO about flexible display

August 28th, 2018 By Jennifer Colegrove Ph.D. Principal Analyst, Touch Display Research Inc.

This week, Touch Display Research interviewed Plastic Logic’s CEO, Mr. Tim Burne, about their flexible e-paper display and flexible touch screen. Mr. Tim Burne joined Plastic Logic in 2013 and became the CEO in 2015. Mr. Burne indicated Plastic Logic’s organic TFT (OTFT) backplane is very flexible and robust, thus it is very suitable for the curved wearable devices and many other applications.

3M’s metal mesh touch screen patents and lawsuits interview

August 24, 2018  By Jennifer Colegrove, Ph.D. Principal Analyst, Touch Display Research Inc.

This week 3M announced a patent infringement lawsuit again a touch panel supplier Tovis, its subsidiary Tovis North America, and Scientific Games Corporation. The suit alleges that certain Tovis touch display products which are used by Scientific Games in their gaming machines infringe 3M’s U.S. Patents 8,179,381; 9,823,786; 8,274,494; and 8,704,799.

In the “ITO-replacement: transparent conductor market 2017 report, Seventh edition”, Touch Display Research profiled over three hundred companies working on non-ITO transparent conductors. Metal mesh is one of the most popular transparent conductor materials and is widely used in projected capacitive touch sensors for smart phones, active pen touch tablets and notebooks, and in large-format, digital touch signage.

Figure: ITO Replacement 2017 Report

Source: Touch Display Research Inc., ITO-Replacement Report, February 2017

Earlier this year, 3M filed a similar patent infringement lawsuit against Elo Touch Solutions Inc.

“3M invests substantially in research and development to create innovative products for our customers,” said Makoto Ishii, vice president and general manager, 3M Display Materials and Systems Division. “We will defend our intellectual property protecting those investments against unauthorized use and infringement by metal mesh manufacturers, original equipment manufacturers, and others making use of 3M’s intellectual property rights.”

Touch Display Research interviewed Mr. Scott Hagermoser, Global Business Manager of 3M Touch Systems about metal mesh patents and the lawsuit. I asked that since metal mesh is a widely used ITO-replacement transparent conductor, what was the optimal result that 3M expected from this legal action. Mr. Hagermoser indicated, “3M doesn’t want to be overly disruptive to the touch industry; we are not a patent troll organization. We offer to license our metal mesh technologies so we can get compensation for our investment.”

Metal mesh suppliers have different patterns and structures, such as one film with two sides of metal mesh, or two films where each side has one metal mesh.  I asked if it was possible that some metal mesh companies could avoid 3M’s metal mesh patents. Mr. Hagermoser indicated 3M had many claims in their metal mesh patents, and the details have to be left to the lawyers and engineers to figure out.

I asked if 3M is also suing Microsoft for the metal mesh, Mr. Hagermoser said that he won’t comment on that.

I’ve been the first industry analyst to write market research reports about the touch screen industry since 2006. When I saw the trends of new transparent conductive material used on touch screens, I published the industry’s first “ITO-Replacement: Transparent Conductor Market Report” in 2013. Many touch screen manufacturers, display manufacturers, OEM/ODMs are my good industry friends. I don’t like to see them sue each other. However, on the other hand, I don’t like the thought of intellectual property theft. We should play the game fairly. I recommend when your company manufactures or purchases metal mesh touch screens, you inquire if that touch screen is clear from others patents.

SID 2018: flexible display, quantum dots and smart windows are hot topics

May 24, 2018, by Jennifer Colegrove Ph.D.

I just returned from SID DisplayWeek 2018 in the beautiful Log Angeles, California. It was my honor to meet some of you in person.

When I asked the president of SID– Dr. Helge Seetzen at Tandemlaunch—on Tuesday, he indicated this year’s conference had broken the record with over 6400 people registered, and there may be more in the next couple of days.

According to the SID Seminar chair—Dr. Ray Ma at Nanosys–, the attendees of the Monday seminar is also a record high, with over 800 people registered for Monday seminars. Good job, applause to the SID DisplayWeek committees.

I was excited and honored to be invited and taught a seminar at SID DisplayWeek again. The 90-minutes seminar is about Display and Emerging Technologies Market Forecast –LCD, OLED, e-paper, touch screen, smart windows and voice recognition.

More than 270 companies working on flexible display and flexible touch screens are profiled in the report.

What are the surprises of each hot topics? More analysis of SID 2018 can be found in the “Touch and Emerging Display” monthly report.
