(Continued from page 7)

I was taken to a hospital in the nearby town, since there was no hospital in the village. I remember the hospital room was all white, very different from my grandparent’s mud brick house. Grandma and I slept in a small bed in the hospital room for several days. Some friends and relatives came to visit me and brought me crackers. I used to like crackers. But while I was in the hospital, I tasted a cracker, and thought to myself, “Why doesn’t the cracker taste good anymore?” After I recovered those crackers started to taste good again. Since then my forehead has a dent in the right temple.

Many years later, my mom told me that my grandparents were scared. They dared not tell my parents about me being hospitalized until I recovered.

Suicide neighbor and my friend Xiaoxia. China 1976

When I was about six, our neighbor’s mother committed suicide by hanging herself. She left her husband and three young children. The oldest son was about my age and his name was Xino. His younger sister was a girl named Xiaoxia who was about five years old at that time. They also had a one-year-old baby brother. Such a poor family! Three kids lost their mother at such a young age.

Late one afternoon I was wandering through the village with nothing to do. It was too early for dinner and my grandma hadn’t called me home. It started to get dark. Most people had gone home since there was no electricity in the village.

Just then, I saw five years old Xiaoxia standing near a pile of trash crying quietly. Two older boys were standing by her. I walked closer and saw the two boys using a stick to put manure on Xiaoxia’s hair. Even though the dark brown manure was stuck to her hair, Xiaoxia was just standing there and crying.

(Continued from page 6)

I remembered one day my grandpa and I were in the field. My grandpa felt ill. He threw up and he pulled a long pink worm that was longer than my hand, out of his mouth. I was five or six years old. I looked back and forth between at my grandpa and the long worm, worried.

My grandpa said, “Little Jen, don’t tell your grandma about this, Okay?”

I replied gently, “Okay.”

I had forgotten about this until I had grown up. Then I understand the long worm was a parasite, a common infection in China in the 1970s.

My forehead was stoned. China 1975

I was hospitalized when I was about five years old.

It started as a normal day, I was playing with another five or six kids in the village. Somebody said let’s run to some places, so we all ran. While I was running with other kids, one kid, Anno, was running in front of me. He suddenly turned back and threw a stone. “Bang!” That stone hit my forehead. I shouted “Aooo!” and used my right hand to touch my forehead. I saw blood flowing down my hand. I immediately started to cry. The other kids were all stopped running and looked at me. With my hand holding my bloody forehead, I walked back home.

When my grandparents saw I was bleeding, grandpa went to the kitchen and took some ashes from under the wok to put on my bleeding forehead. Then he wrapped a piece of cloth around my forehead. They said I can go to play again and I did. (Now I realized my grandparents lacked basic medical supplies and medical knowledge.)

Later that evening I started to have fever and felt sick. I lay on a bed with my whole family (grandparents and two uncles) around me. I struggled to sit up on the bed and throw up. My grandpa used his hands to catch my vomit. I remember it very clearly. I thought the vomit was very disgusting! How come grandpa didn’t mind? He still looked at me with deep love and concern for my illness.

Grandpa loved me too. Somedays when he came back from a long day working in the field, he would call me over and show me a grasshopper in his hand. He would say, “I’ll roast it for you.” Then I would happily wait. Grandpa would set a fire in the kitchen and quickly roast the grasshopper on the fire. He handed it to me. I would put it in my mouth and chew it. The grasshopper was so yummy.

One Chinese New Year I was happily waiting for the meat dumplings. My grandparents were poor. They could only afford to eat meat once a year. Finally, it was New Year’s Day! The dumpling was ready. I had a bite… and it was carrot inside the dumpling. Although my grandpa had cut the carrot to small pieces, it still didn’t taste good. I ate a few and decided to go to play with my friend. I walked to my friend, Golden Wheat’s, house. Golden Wheat’s mom was making her eat dumplings. Golden Wheat and I were best friends. She was a picky eater, and only ate the skin part of the dumpling. She would not eat the filling part of the dumpling. I saw two meat filling in the small bowl and my mouth started to water.

Golden Wheat’s mom shouted to Golden Wheat, “Eat the filling! If you don’t eat, I’ll give them to little Jen!”

I heard that, and waited quietly.

Golden Wheat replied to her mom, “I don’t want to eat!”

Golden Wheat’s mom handed the small bowl to me and said to me, “Little Jen, do you want it?”

I immediately jumped on the opportunity and devoured the dumpling filling. It was so yummy.

Below is page 5 of my: “Memoir: Foolishly Brave Unconditionally Blessed, From a Chinese Girl to American Working Mother”.

(Continued from page 4)

My mother was born in 1945, four years before the establishment of the People’s Republic of China. Starting from her generation, Chinese women would all have natural feet.

In 2021, sitting in my sunny Texas backyard and looking at my natural size-eight feet, I thought about all the women in history until now throughout China and the world. Women have produced every boy and girl from their womb. Women’s lives reflect their time and society.

My grandma loved me. I slept with my grandma in the same bed every night when I was a kid.

My grandma liked to connect doors, which meant visiting other neighbors without invitation. Connecting doors was very common and normal in the 1970s China. We didn’t respect other’s privacy. The hospitality was to let them in whenever your friends, neighbors, or relatives knocked on your door. My grandma would let me hold the bottom of her dark blue blouse. I would be like her shadow. We walked to a neighbor’s house and my grandma knocked on their door. The neighbor lady opened the door and welcomed us in. Neighbor lady would pull a stool for my grandma and a small stool for me to sit on. My grandma and the neighbor lady would chat and chat. I would sit there and wait for a long time. As a five-year old, I had no idea what these adults were talking about. After a while, I would tell grandma, “I’m hungry, let’s go home.” The neighbor lady would walk to a basket that was hanging on a metal wire. People kept their food in a basket on a metal wire so rats couldn’t get to the food. She would find a piece of steaming bun or a piece of sweet potato bun and hand it to me. I would be very happily eating. They would chat more and more.

I did help with house work by fetching sweet potatoes from the underground cellar. Since there were no refrigerators or freezers, my grandparents kept some of their sweet potatoes in an underground cellar. The cellar’s opening was in a yard covered with a wooden lid. When we needed sweet potatoes, my grandpa would call me to help and let five-year-old me sit in a large willow-woven basket. He would tie a rope on the basket handle and slowly lower it in the underground cellar. When the basket with me in it reached the bottom of the cellar, I would step out of the basket and look around. It was dark with some sweet potatoes on the bottom. When I looked up, I saw my grandpa’s face at the edge of the bright circle above me.

My grandpa would say to me “Little Jen, put some sweet potatoes in the basket.”

I would do so. Then grandpa would say “That’s enough. Little Jen, sit in the basket.” I would step in the basket with sweet potatoes. Grandpa would pull the rope and the basket with me in it would rise to the ground of the yard. We were a team.

March 22, 2022 by Jennifer Colegrove Ph.D. founder, Touch Display Research Inc.

Below is page 4 of my: “Memoir: Foolishly Brave Unconditionally Blessed, From a Chinese Girl to American Working Mother”.

(Continued from page 3)

I remember my paternal great-grandmother (my biology grandfather’s mother). She didn’t live in the same house as my grandparents, but somewhere nearby. My great-grandmother visited my grandparents sometimes. My great-grandma was born in 1899 in China and passed away in 1975. Foot-binding was a traditional common practice when she was young, so her feet were only three inches long. They were proudly called “Three-inch Golden Lotus Flowers” in old China. She wore handmade, black fabric shoes with a white fabric sole. The front toe of the shoe was so narrow that it looked like the pointed shoes you can find in modern days, but the whole shoe was only three inches long and two inches wide. Great-grandma wore the normal clothes for Chinese old ladies in the 1970s. She wore a dark blue blouse with twisted fabric buttons on the side and black pants wrapped at the ankle so the “Three-Inch Golden Lotus” was proudly visible. She would take small but fast steps to my grandparents’ house to chat with my grandma.

My parental grandma’s feet were a similar shape to my great-grandma’s but larger, about five inches long and also a little wider than my great grandmother’s. Grandma was born in 1919. She started to wrap her feet when she was six or seven years old, as instructed by her parents. She told me that at those times, if a girl didn’t wrap her feet small, she wouldn’t be able to find a husband when she grew up. In the 1930s the culture changed and the Chinese began to liberate women’s feet. So, when my grandma was about ten years old, her parents stopped forcing her to wrap her feet. However, at ten years old, the bones of her toes had formed into a point. That shape was with her the rest of her life, until she passed away in the year 1999 at age 81.

Figure:  Old Chinese realistic mud sculptures: I bought these figurines in China because they looked like my grandparents in the farm village. The old lady is making a sole for a shoe. (My grandmother’s right hand was handicapped due to an illness, and she could only do some simple sewing.)

One time my Grandma talked about Chinese foot binding. She said, “The old poem was ‘Three-Inch Golden Lotus performs a lovely walking gesture, looks like a water lotus waving in the wind.’ Later, people changed the saying to ‘People all sit in the bus covered with skirt, nobody sees your feet.’” I was about four or five years old as I sat beside my grandma and watched her patching old clothes for my uncles. Her whole life was influenced by the cultural trends of China in her time. Her generation went through the process of “feet liberation.” However, my grandma couldn’t read or write.

(Continued from page 2)

A small village in China, 1975

My ancestry can be traced back to the scholar Confucius (孔丘) in China. Confucius was a famous educator and philosopher who lived over 2500 years ago; from 551-479 B.C. He had three thousand pupils from different states. Seventy-two became famous during his lifetime. Confucius wrote many books including The Spring and Autumn Annuals. A collection of his statements and discourses were written down later by his disciples and called The Analects (论语). Confucius’ philosophy is called “Ru,” and has influenced Chinese life and even all Asian life for over 2500 years. I am in the 76th generation of his descendants.

In the village with my grandparents, I grew up like a farmer’s girl with dark red skin, two little braids, and always wearing handmade cotton shirt and pants with handmade cotton shoes. In America today, we consider handmade garments to be very high-end, but in the 1970s in China, handmade clothes were cheaper and rough-looking. Machine-made fabrics were considered high-end with smooth beautiful patterns and more expensive.

Henan province was historically an agricultural province. It has a splendid history, for example, the capitals of several dynasties were in Henan province. However, during most of the years of the 20th century (1900-1990), Henan province was one of the poorest places in China.

I remember my grandparent’s home was a simple one-story house made of mud bricks. The house had one living room and two bedrooms. The floor of the house was soil. The window was a square hole on the wall covered with a piece of plastic film instead of glass. There was no electricity and no tap water in the village. There wasn’t even a light bulb, not to mention a television, refrigerator, or microwave oven.

The kitchen had an oven built with bricks, and a big black wok sat on top. My grandpa would light up a fire under the wok and grab corn cobs and straw for cooking fuel. My grandmother’s right hand was handicapped due to an illness. She couldn’t do much house work. My grandpa was the one who cooked and did most of the field work too. At the corner of the kitchen there was a big jar about three feet tall which held the drinking water. The water jar was inside the kitchen so the water wouldn’t freeze during the winter. My uncles would carry two empty barrels to the well in the village to fetch water, and fill up the big water jar.

A small oil lamp was the only light in the evening. It was only burned for a short time to save oil. We went to bed early because my grandpa and my two uncles, who were in their early 20s, had to wake up early the next morning to work in the fields planting corn, wheat, sweet potatoes or carrots. Our meals were mainly corn, sweet potatoes, carrots, and bok choi. Only during the Chinese New Year would my grandparents buy chicken eggs or pork to cook delicious dumplings.

Although the poverty was very severe during the 1970s in China, I was surrounded by the love of my grandparents, my two uncles, and my relatives. With my friends Xino and Jinsui we would run around and play catching tadpoles for hours until the parents or grandparents called us home for dinner.

Below is page 2 of my: “Memoir: Foolishly Brave Unconditionally Blessed, From a Chinese Girl to American Working Mother”.

Chapter 1

Chinese girl in a village—foolishly brave

My earliest memories start at age three in the 1970s, when I lived in a small village in Henan province in China with my grandparents and two uncles. Later I found out I was born in Zhengzhou, a medium-sized city in Henan Province. My parents had my younger brother two years after I was born. They both had full-time jobs which made taking care of children difficult. My grandmother on my father’s side offered to take me from the city to the village where she lived to raise me there until I was ready for school.

This is a picture of me when I was about two years old. It must have been in winter. My parents dressed me up so warmly with cotton coat, cotton pants, cotton shoes, and a faux fur hat. Before they let my grandparents take me to their farm village, they took me to a photo studio for this picture. (At that time, nobody had cameras at home).

Below is page 1 of my: “Memoir: Foolishly Brave Unconditionally Blessed, From a Chinese Girl to American Working Mother”.

When my older daughter was about six years old, she wanted to know what I did for a living, so that she could have an answer when people asked her.

My husband gave her a quick answer: “Just say your mommy is a doctor.”

My daughter opened her eyes wide and turned to me. “Really? Mommy, do you help sick people?”

I tried to explain, “No, I’m not that kind of doctor. I’m the kind of doctor which is also called a Doctor of Philosophy. I write industry reports about displays, touch screens, something like that.”

She nodded.

The next day I heard my six-year-old telling her three-year-old little sister, “Mommy is a doctor who doesn’t help people!”

I just laughed.

This book is a memoir of my family and over fifty years of my life and working experiences. Grow up in a poor village in China, I studied at Peking University (also called Beijing University) in Beijing.

Later I came to America for my Ph.D. education with a scholarship, and married my English teacher. I completed my Ph.D. in Ohio, and found a job in Silicon Valley California. There I worked from engineer to vice president, during this time my husband and I raised two daughters. I founded my own company. We moved to Texas during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Based on the brief description of my journey, you might say my life sounded smooth and even successful. However, when you look into the details, my life was actually full of struggles, with a few lucky moments, just like a few vivid red plum flowers blooming on a black branch of a plum tree in the snowing winter.

Many of the stories I only shared with my family and a few close friends. When I was reading my diaries from many years ago and writing down the experiences I went through, putting myself back into the scenes, it was like opening the wounds that have formed scars, and the wounds started to bleed again. I felt terrified and with emotional pain again.

How did I survive the struggles, poverty, and discrimination to get to where I am today? It’s not my capability, but many people’s help and God’s mercy to me. How I survived bullies when I was young, and how I helped a friend to escape from bully. There are also stories of how I recovered from self-doubt, international and interracial marriage, Asian women suffering in America, how I sued my ex-employer after they laid me off when I was pregnant, how I escaped my ex-employer’s lawyer and established my own company. If you like real estate, I also wrote about how we bought a house in Austin, Texas during the COVID-19 pandemic. If you like humor, this book has a chapter of “Kids say the funniest things”.

I want to leave a legacy, to China and America, both countries that raised me and provided education and so many opportunities to me.

Many miracles happened in my life, I don’t want to hide them. I want to tell the story how I found Jesus and share the praise-worthy deeds of God, and the wonders he has done.

My mom once said I was foolishly brave, and unconditionally blessed. I’m foolishly brave once again to write and share these stories, with genuine hope that what I went through can help you somewhere, sometime, and in some way.

Happiness has two different types: one type is happiness “when”, another type is happiness “always”. Happiness “always” is the true happiness. Happiness “always” is a joy state within your heart, therefore it is also called joy. I finally have found joy.

My dear friend, I can show you how.

Jennifer Colegrove, Ph.D.

My mom once said I was foolishly brave, unconditionally blessed. I’m foolishly brave once again to write and share my stories, with genuine hope that what I went through can help you somewhere, sometime, and in some way.

After 10 years of writing, I finally published my: “Memoir: Foolishly Brave Unconditionally Blessed, From a Chinese Girl to American Working Mother”, I wrote about my over fifty years life and working experiences. Born in the midst of the Chinese Culture Revolution, I grew up in a poor village in China, studied at Peking University in Beijing, and received my Ph.D. from Kent State University in Ohio. In this memoir, I shared my fifty-year journey from a student to working mother in Silicon Valley, and entrepreneur in Austin Texas.
