Below is page 6 of my: “Memoir: Foolishly Brave Unconditionally Blessed, From a Chinese Girl to American Working Mother”.

(Continued from page 5)

Grandpa loved me too. Somedays when he came back from a long day working in the field, he would call me over and show me a grasshopper in his hand. He would say, “I’ll roast it for you.” Then I would happily wait. Grandpa would set a fire in the kitchen and quickly roast the grasshopper on the fire. He handed it to me. I would put it in my mouth and chew it. The grasshopper was so yummy.

One Chinese New Year I was happily waiting for the meat dumplings. My grandparents were poor. They could only afford to eat meat once a year. Finally, it was New Year’s Day! The dumpling was ready. I had a bite… and it was carrot inside the dumpling. Although my grandpa had cut the carrot to small pieces, it still didn’t taste good. I ate a few and decided to go to play with my friend. I walked to my friend, Golden Wheat’s, house. Golden Wheat’s mom was making her eat dumplings. Golden Wheat and I were best friends. She was a picky eater, and only ate the skin part of the dumpling. She would not eat the filling part of the dumpling. I saw two meat filling in the small bowl and my mouth started to water.

Golden Wheat’s mom shouted to Golden Wheat, “Eat the filling! If you don’t eat, I’ll give them to little Jen!”

I heard that, and waited quietly.

Golden Wheat replied to her mom, “I don’t want to eat!”

Golden Wheat’s mom handed the small bowl to me and said to me, “Little Jen, do you want it?”

I immediately jumped on the opportunity and devoured the dumpling filling. It was so yummy.
