(Continued from page 11)

I was left “alone” with my “new” parents and “new” younger brother. I had only met my parents twice before when they visited me in the farming village, and I’d never met my younger brother before.

There were many differences between my parents’ apartment and my grandparents’ house. My parents’ apartment was in a row of flat, connected apartments. It was basically a studio without a bathroom. My grandparents’ house had hazy plastic film covered windows while my parents’ apartment had windows of transparent glass. My grandparents’ house had a dirt floor, while my parent’s apartment was concrete. At night, my grandparents used a small oil lamp, while my parents had two “electric lanterns”, which were actually fluorescent lights. The light was much brighter than the small oil lamp. On the wall of my parent’s living room, there were pictures of Chairman Mao and Chairman Hua next to each other.

Both of my parents had full-time jobs. Typical of China in the 1970s and 80s, both of my parents worked full time, six days a week. My father worked for the railroad, and would ride a bike to work every day. My mother was employed as a retail store salesperson and later became a manager in the store. Their total wages were about fifty RenMinBi (about US $9) per month in the 1970s.

My brother is two years younger than me. He was about four years old at that time. He wore a green Liberation Army hat with a shining red metal star on the front. He looked very cute and fashionable, since that’s what the cool boys wore at the time.

Chapter 2

Elementary school—adjusting to the city

From village to city

When I was six and a half years old, my grandma and my uncle took me on a train to Zhengzhou City to live with my parents in their apartment, so I could attend elementary school in the city. On the bustling city road, hundreds of people were riding their bicycles, and rows of automobiles were on the road. The air smelled of gasoline, which was so different from the quiet, empty farming village from where I just came.

My mom told me later that when my grandma and uncle took me to Zhengzhou, I looked like a farmer’s girl with a tanned face full of freckles, wearing a handmade blouse, pants, and shoes. I spoke with a village accent, and I had just lost my front two teeth. My mom found out I had lots of lice in my hair, so she boiled warm water and washed my hair in a basin to get rid of the pests.

After one day in Zhengzhou, my grandma and uncle went back to the village. Before my grandma left, she looked at my four-year-old naughty brother, and then said to my parents, “Don’t let your son bully little Jen.”

(My grandma later told me she missed me very much, but we were too poor to afford more train tickets at that time. When I learned how to write letters in the third grade, my first letter was to my grandparents and uncles in the village. I then received their letter in reply, which was dictated by my grandma to my uncle, since my grandma was illiterate. I wouldn’t see my grandma for another nine years until 1985 when I was about 15 years old.)

My grandparents divorced

While I was living with my grandparents in the small village, sometimes my grandma would say “Your grandpa went to the rat hole.” I looked at the rat hole in the corner of the room and said “Grandpa is in the field.”

My grandma would say, “Not this grandpa, the grandpa in Sanmenxia City.”

After I grew up I heard the full story. My grandma and my biological grandpa were married and had my father in 1946. Then my biological grandpa joined the Liberation Army. After the new China was established in 1949, he became an officer in the city Zhengzhou. He asked my grandma to move to Zhengzhou to live with him. But my grandma didn’t want to move, so she stayed in the farming village with my father. My biological grandpa divorced my grandma and re-married someone in the city. My grandma remarried my step-grandpa in the farming village. So, the grandpa who raised me was actually my step-grandpa.

Video: Dr. Jennifer Colegrove introduces her memoir:

“My mom once said I was foolishly brave, unconditionally blessed. I’m foolishly brave once again to write and share these stories, with genuine hope that what I went through can help you somewhere, sometime, and in some way. Although I have went through a lot of struggles and afflictions, I have finally found true happiness. My dear friend, I can show you how,” said Dr. Jennifer Colegrove, author of the memoir and founder of Touch Display Research, Inc.

  • “Chinese girl in a village–foolishly brave”, “Elementary school—adjust in the city”, and “Middle and high school– girls are not as good as boys?” Dr. Colegrove tells how she survived poverty and adversity in China, how she helped a friend to escape from bullies, and how she recovered from self-doubt.
  • “International and interracial marriage”, Dr. Colegrove shares the cultural differences and some ancient Chinese stories.
  • “Motherhood and lawsuit”, “When your father is NOT the chairman—working woman in Silicon Valley”, “How to find your dream job—and story of two jade”, and “Stand up for your name”, Dr. Colegrove talks about Asian women suffering in business, how she sued her ex-employer after they laid her off when she was pregnant.
  • “Exodus—How I escaped my ex-employer’s lawyers”, Dr. Colegrove shares her fear, courage and how she left her ex-employer and established her own company.
  • “How we bought a house in Austin, Texas during the COVID-19 Pandemic”, Dr. Colegrove tells the story of why and how they moved from California to Texas, and how they bought a house in Austin.
  • “Say a prayer and get strength from a higher power” and “Miracles in China”, Dr. Colegrove shares how she moved to USA, how she became a believer and God helped her in many ways.
  • How to deal with jealousy people; how to deal with your boss; how to love yourself better.
  • “Love yourself plan” and “Love your people plan”, Dr. Colegrove believes life can be full of joy if you choose to, and she shows us how.

(Continued from page 8)

I was only six years old, but I knew it wasn’t a good thing to put manure on someone’s hair. These two boys were just laughing about it.

I don’t know where I got the courage, but I said to the two boys, “Don’t do that to Xiaoxia.”

The two looked at me and each other, and then laughed and continued to put manure on Xiaoxia’s head.

The two boys were bigger than me. I wouldn’t win a fight. I didn’t even know how to fight at six years old. So I just said, “I’ll tell your parents!” Actually, I only knew those boys lived on the other side of the village, but I didn’t know which house was theirs. I walked behind a house and walked a circle. When I came back the two boys were gone. Xiaoxia was still standing there crying. I took Xiaoxia’s hand and we tried to use a stick to take the manure off in her hair. It was almost dark, so I walked Xiaoxia home.

When I returned to my grandparent’s home, I told them what happened. My grandpa said, “Those bad boys! They bully a girl without a mother!” My grandma sighed, “Aaaee. Poor kids without a mother.”

Twelve years later I was about eighteen and a freshman in college. During winter vacation I took a bus and visited my grandparents in the village. All my childhood friends came to see me. Xiaoxia had grown to a seventeen-year-old woman. I hardly recognized her. She told me that she still remembered the time I helped to save her from the bullies.
