In Memory of Larry Tannas Jr.

April 16, 2021 by Jennifer Colegrove Ph.D. Principal Analyst, Touch Display Research Inc.

Today I read the SID Information Display Journal and saw the news that Larry Tannas Jr. passed away in February 2021. My heart suddenly sank by the sad news. Larry Tannas Jr. is one of the many SID leaders that I respect deeply.

I got to know Larry Tannas Jr. and Larry Iboshi (SID LA Chapter chairman. Two Larry are both my good industry friends) at SID Los Angeles Chapter one-day conferences. At the 2015 SID LA Chapter one-day conference, he helped me to take the picture of me while I gave the presentation. See the picture here and I credited it to him in 2015.

Mr. Larry Tannas Jr. is a very good speaker. His presentation is very clear and humorous. I recall when he gave a presentation in 2014 to introduce his company Tannas Electronic Displays, he said, “I just cut glasses. But it’s not easy to cut glasses, you got to cut it the right way.” He used the simple sentences and humor to explain about resizing liquid crystal displays.

Over the past 10 years, I’ve attended the SID LA Chapter one-day conferences about 4 or 5 times. SID LA chapter 2020 one-day conference is very successful. Emerging Technology and Market Forecast at SID LA Chapter 2020 one-day conference. SID LA Chapter one-day conference is very successful.

I recall Mr. Tannas was always very engaged listening and asking me questions, even though he was already 80 years old. There was one year at the conference, I met a young man he indicated he is the grandson of Larry Tannas. I said, “Wow! I hope someday, I can bring my grandson to SID conferences.”
