Page 14 of Memoir: Foolishly Brave Unconditionally Blessed, From a Chinese Girl to American Working Mother

Below is page 14 of my: “Memoir: Foolishly Brave Unconditionally Blessed, From a Chinese Girl to American Working Mother”.

(Continued from page 13)

My father liked to hunt wild rabbits in the winter and fishing in nearby rivers in the summer, and every time, my parents would give some rabbit meat or fish to our neighbors. My father would skin the rabbit and nail its skin onto the wall outside our apartment to dry. Later, he could sell the rabbit skin. Several times, the rabbit skin was stolen while drying.

At that time, I didn’t know how blessed I was to have a city “family registration location”, called Huko 户口 in Chinese. In China, the “family registration location” is based on where your parents lived and where you were born. It limited where you could live, where you could enroll in school, where you could get medical care, and where you’ll find a job. Basically, the government prevented people from freedom of movement.

Many of my childhood friends still lived in the village their entire life, since their “family registration location” was in the village. In the 1970s to 1990s there were probably three ways people could change their “family registration location”:

  1. Marry someone from another location.
  2. Join the People’s Liberation Army. After four years of Army duty, the person would be given a few choices on where to work.
  3. Pass the exams and be admitted to colleges or universities. After graduation, the person could find a job and relocate there.

Praises of Foolishly Brave Unconditionally Blessed

“It is a good book. Hard to put down.”– Jerry

“Loved your book so much I’m starting to read it for the second time! “ –Barbara

“I really enjoyed your memoir as it is well written and has a lot of personal insights incl. cultural and religious ones. I experienced how much your parents did for you even they have only little wealth and the way you support them! That is completely different to many people in Germany – they ask for money from the government first.”  -–a reader and friend in Germany

“I just read chapter 6 today, very good. Yes, it takes love and patience to make an interracial relationship work. Especially from different cultures. But that is what Jesus teaches us right? Love and patience.”—a reader in USA
