CES 2021: Micro LED and mini LED continue to be the bright spot

Jan 14th, 2021, by Jennifer Colegrove, Ph.D., CEO and Principal Analyst, Touch Display Research

I just attended the press day of CES 2021 online. I’ve been attending CES every year for the last 13 years. It’s my honor to meet some of you virtually. CES is the conference where many consumer electronic brands show case their most advanced technologies and the conference that set the trends for the near future.

Since four years ago, Micro LED and mini LED had been making big splash at every year’s CES. Hundreds of thousands attendees at CES were “wowed” by the beautiful, over 100”, or over 200” micro and mini LED digital signage and TVs. I have surveys and interviews with many micro LED and mini LED suppliers and display suppliers at the exhibition. This year micro LED and mini LED continue to be the bright spot and ready for exponential growth.

Samsung announced to bring direct-view micro LED TV to the market in this March.

LG announced to bring mini LED backlight with local dimming QNED TV to the market this year.

As we know, several other TV manufacturers are bringing or will bring mini LED backlight TV to the market in 2021 as well.

In the recently published “Micro and Mini LED Technologies, Supply Chain and Market Forecast 2020-2030 Report, Third Edition,” Touch Display Research Inc., a market research and consulting firm, analyzed all the methods to fabricate micro and mini LED displays along with their supply chains. More than 250 companies and research institutes working on micro LED and mini LED display are profiled in the database of this report.

CES 2019: Micro LED and mini LED made big splash

Jan 9th, 2019, by Jennifer Colegrove, Ph.D., CEO and Principal Analyst, Touch Display Research

I just returned from CES 2019 at Las Vegas. It’s my honor to meet some of you in person. CES is the conference where many consumer electronic brands show case their most advanced technologies and the conference that set the trends for the near future. At CES 2019, Micro LED and mii LED made big splash.

At CES 2019, Touch Display Research was invited and visited Plessey’s booth at the South Hall of Las Vegas Convention Center.  We met with Plessey’s President of corporate and business development, Mr. Mike Lee. Mr. Lee showed Touch Display Research their blue micro LED microdisplay, which is 0.7 inch with 1080p resolution.

As we know, Plessey’s manufacturing method is one of the 15 methods we covered in the Micro & Mini LED 2018 Report. Plessey claims their repeatable GaN-on-Silicon monolithic process method has high yield, good wavelength uniformity, and is scalable and economical.

Which new companies are showing micro LED at CES 2019?

What is TCL’s new strategy for 2019? What is Samsung’s new strategy for 2019?

Which startup companies are showing promising new technologies?

All these are covered in the recently published Touch and Emerging Display monthly report: CES 2019 special report.
