May 24, 2022 by Jennifer Colegrove Ph.D. founder, Touch Display Research Inc.

I’m holding my memoir paper version: “Memoir: Foolishly Brave Unconditionally Blessed, From a Chinese Girl to American Working Mother”.

(Continued from page 14)

How My Parents Met

My mother was the youngest of six children. Her parents had starved to death in the 1950s. My mother told me that she didn’t remember her parents that much, since her parents died when she was only six. My mother’s parents (my maternal grandparents) had a few acres of farmland before 1949. In 1949, when the People’s Republic of China was established, my maternal grandparents were classified as “rich farmer”, and their land was taken away by the Chinese government.  In 1952, their family ran out of food, so my mother’s parents decided to walk to another village to borrow food from relatives, but they collapsed on the side of the road and never woke up. Other neighbors saw my grandparents’ body beside the road and came to their house to tell my mother’s siblings.

My mother’s oldest sister was twenty years older than her. Her oldest sister raised her until she was thirteen. My mother graduated from an elementary school, which was her highest education level. Her older brother who had a job in Zhengzhou helped her to find work in a caw and goat farm in the city. That is where my parents met each other.

Below is page 14 of my: “Memoir: Foolishly Brave Unconditionally Blessed, From a Chinese Girl to American Working Mother”.

(Continued from page 13)

My father liked to hunt wild rabbits in the winter and fishing in nearby rivers in the summer, and every time, my parents would give some rabbit meat or fish to our neighbors. My father would skin the rabbit and nail its skin onto the wall outside our apartment to dry. Later, he could sell the rabbit skin. Several times, the rabbit skin was stolen while drying.

At that time, I didn’t know how blessed I was to have a city “family registration location”, called Huko 户口 in Chinese. In China, the “family registration location” is based on where your parents lived and where you were born. It limited where you could live, where you could enroll in school, where you could get medical care, and where you’ll find a job. Basically, the government prevented people from freedom of movement.

Many of my childhood friends still lived in the village their entire life, since their “family registration location” was in the village. In the 1970s to 1990s there were probably three ways people could change their “family registration location”:

  1. Marry someone from another location.
  2. Join the People’s Liberation Army. After four years of Army duty, the person would be given a few choices on where to work.
  3. Pass the exams and be admitted to colleges or universities. After graduation, the person could find a job and relocate there.

May 5, 2022 by Jennifer Colegrove Ph.D. founder, Touch Display Research Inc.

Below is page 13 of my: “Memoir: Foolishly Brave Unconditionally Blessed, From a Chinese Girl to American Working Mother”.

(Continued from page 12)

My younger brother was in a full-time child care center six days a week, including overnight. On Saturday afternoons, my parents would take my brother back home for the weekend, which was only one day at that time––Sunday. Monday morning, they’d send him to the child-care center again.

I was old enough to go to elementary school. However, my mother blamed my grandma for not bringing me to Zhengzhou until that November when the school had already been in session for over two months. My parents decided to let me stay at home until the next September to enroll me into elementary school. For several months, I would be home alone with the apartment key hanging from my neck. Sometimes I’d play with the other kids in our neighborhood. At other times, I’d do the homework that my mom assigned to me—writing Chinese characters one hundred times in a notebook. Around 5pm, I would turn on the charcoal oven and boil water, so when my mom would come home around 5:10, she could start cooking right away.

Although everybody in Zhengzhou had to wait in ration lines for cooking oil, flour, and meat, the living conditions were much better than in my grandparents’ village. We had either eggs or meat every day. My favorite food in 1976 was meat with lots of fat. At the dinner table, my parents would look at their long-separated daughter eating fatty meat like a starving kid. They’d chuckle and then use a chopstick to give me a piece of fat from their bowl. I would mumble “thank you” and quickly eat all the fat in my bowl. In the last four to five years that I had lived in the village, I probably ate meat only five times in total.

(Continued from page 11)

I was left “alone” with my “new” parents and “new” younger brother. I had only met my parents twice before when they visited me in the farming village, and I’d never met my younger brother before.

There were many differences between my parents’ apartment and my grandparents’ house. My parents’ apartment was in a row of flat, connected apartments. It was basically a studio without a bathroom. My grandparents’ house had hazy plastic film covered windows while my parents’ apartment had windows of transparent glass. My grandparents’ house had a dirt floor, while my parent’s apartment was concrete. At night, my grandparents used a small oil lamp, while my parents had two “electric lanterns”, which were actually fluorescent lights. The light was much brighter than the small oil lamp. On the wall of my parent’s living room, there were pictures of Chairman Mao and Chairman Hua next to each other.

Both of my parents had full-time jobs. Typical of China in the 1970s and 80s, both of my parents worked full time, six days a week. My father worked for the railroad, and would ride a bike to work every day. My mother was employed as a retail store salesperson and later became a manager in the store. Their total wages were about fifty RenMinBi (about US $9) per month in the 1970s.

My brother is two years younger than me. He was about four years old at that time. He wore a green Liberation Army hat with a shining red metal star on the front. He looked very cute and fashionable, since that’s what the cool boys wore at the time.

“I just read chapter 6 today, very good. Yes, it takes love and patience to make an interracial relationship work. Especially from different cultures. But that is what Jesus teaches us right? Love and patience.”—a reader in USA

Chapter 2

Elementary school—adjusting to the city

From village to city

When I was six and a half years old, my grandma and my uncle took me on a train to Zhengzhou City to live with my parents in their apartment, so I could attend elementary school in the city. On the bustling city road, hundreds of people were riding their bicycles, and rows of automobiles were on the road. The air smelled of gasoline, which was so different from the quiet, empty farming village from where I just came.

My mom told me later that when my grandma and uncle took me to Zhengzhou, I looked like a farmer’s girl with a tanned face full of freckles, wearing a handmade blouse, pants, and shoes. I spoke with a village accent, and I had just lost my front two teeth. My mom found out I had lots of lice in my hair, so she boiled warm water and washed my hair in a basin to get rid of the pests.

After one day in Zhengzhou, my grandma and uncle went back to the village. Before my grandma left, she looked at my four-year-old naughty brother, and then said to my parents, “Don’t let your son bully little Jen.”

(My grandma later told me she missed me very much, but we were too poor to afford more train tickets at that time. When I learned how to write letters in the third grade, my first letter was to my grandparents and uncles in the village. I then received their letter in reply, which was dictated by my grandma to my uncle, since my grandma was illiterate. I wouldn’t see my grandma for another nine years until 1985 when I was about 15 years old.)

My grandparents divorced

While I was living with my grandparents in the small village, sometimes my grandma would say “Your grandpa went to the rat hole.” I looked at the rat hole in the corner of the room and said “Grandpa is in the field.”

My grandma would say, “Not this grandpa, the grandpa in Sanmenxia City.”

After I grew up I heard the full story. My grandma and my biological grandpa were married and had my father in 1946. Then my biological grandpa joined the Liberation Army. After the new China was established in 1949, he became an officer in the city Zhengzhou. He asked my grandma to move to Zhengzhou to live with him. But my grandma didn’t want to move, so she stayed in the farming village with my father. My biological grandpa divorced my grandma and re-married someone in the city. My grandma remarried my step-grandpa in the farming village. So, the grandpa who raised me was actually my step-grandpa.
