Why Japan restricts polyimide to South Korea

July 15, 2019, By Jennifer Colegrove Ph.D. Principal Analyst, Touch Display Research Inc.

On June 30th, 2019, Japanese government announced trade restriction of three materials to South Korea. Under proposed changes to export rules, Japanese suppliers would need to apply for approval for each contract to sell specific chemicals to South Korean buyers.

The three materials are polyimide, Hydrogen Fluoride, and photo resistant. All these materials are critical for displays and semiconductor manufacturing.

In the newly published “Touch and Emerging Display monthly report”, Touch Display Research Inc., a market research and consulting firm, analyzed polyimide for display applications.

The report also discussed the polyimide material for foldable cover lens applications, and the suppliers in Japan, Korea, Taiwan, and USA.

In the Flexible Display and Flexible Touch 2018 Report, 3rd edition, Touch Display Research forecasted flexible, curved and foldable display will have over $75 billion revenue, which will be about 36% market share in 2027.

CES 2019: Flexible Display and Flexible Touch

Jan 26th, 2019, by Jennifer Colegrove, Ph.D., CEO and Principal Analyst, Touch Display Research

(This article is an abstract from the “Touch and Emerging Display monthly report, CES 2019 special report”. For the full analysist and report, you can subscribe here in the Market Research Report page.)

I just returned from CES 2019 at Las Vegas. It’s my honor to meet some of you in person. CES is the conference where many consumer electronic brands show case their most advanced technologies and the conference that set the trends for the near future.

At CES 2019, competition between manufacturers of flexible/foldable AMOLED display devices is heating up.

At CES 2019, Royole demonstrated the FlexPai. It features a 7.8” foldable AMOLED display with 1920×1440 pixel format, 308 ppi resolution. I had a hand on with the device and bend it. The device can only be bent backwards away from the display. When I tried to bend it inward, the mechanical structure would forbidden it, which can protect their flexible AMOLED. The device is actually light weight.

Royole took the 7.8” flexible AMOLED and used it into several other applications: a hat with the display, a T-shirt with the display, and even a purse with the display on it. The battery is hidden in the hat, or the purse. The hat and T-shirt are available for $899 each. The purse is a prototype and they hope a famous brand will adopt the technology.

In the Flexible Display and Flexible Touch 2018 Report, 3rd edition, Touch Display Research analyzed over 270 companies working on flexible display and flexible touch screens. Touch Display Research forecasted flexible, curved and foldable display will have over $75 billion revenue, which will be about 36% market share in 2027.

What is TCL’s new strategy for 2019? What is Samsung’s new strategy for 2019?

Which other startup companies are showing promising new technologies?

All these are covered in the recently published Touch and Emerging Display monthly report: CES 2019 special report.

Flexible, curved, bendable displays at turning point for fast growth

June 9, 2016

Flexible display is at the turning point for fast growth. We can see this trend at SID 2016 DisplayWeek.

Japan Display Inc. (JDI) showcased several curved AMOLED displays. Two of the curved AMOLED were in a glass box. Another curved AMOLED demo is integrated with a curved touch screen on it.

E Ink showed large size flexible active matrix electrophoretic display.

FlexEnable showcased flexible LCD for wrist wearable devices.

In the “Flexible, Curved, and Bendable Display Technologies and Market Forecast Report.” (Second Edition), Touch Display Research analyzed over 10 display technologies, over 14 applications of flexible displays, and shows how the flexible display market is accelerating. This report profiles over 270 companies working on flexible displays.

OLED is the most researched with 46 companies and research institutes working on it. Touch Display Research believes there are strong opportunities for flexible LCD as well since it could be lower cost than flexible AMOLED.

Touch Display Research forecasts that the flexible display market will reach $30 Billion by 2025.

Figure 1. Flexible, curved and bendable display market forecast to 2025

flexible 2016 forecast with TDR

Flexible display could be used in four types of form factors: bendable dynamic, foldable dynamic, fixed curved, flat with flexible substrate. Currently, flexible displays are already shipping in large volumes. We forecast that flexible, curved and bendable displays will have tremendous growth in the next several years.

Flexible, curved and bendable displays still face many challenges. Over 10 display technologies could be made into flexible curved bendable form factors. Challenges and opportunities are analyzed in the report.
