CES 2019: OLED, Quantum Dot, Micro LED, Sensors Plus AI

Jan 9th, 2019, by Jennifer Colegrove, Ph.D., CEO and Principal Analyst, Touch Display Research

I’m at CES 2019 in Las Vegas. The weather is nice this year (not like last year’s rain at CES), cloudy and cool.

As an industry analyst, the Monday’s press conference is a MUST for me to attend every year. This Monday I attended the press conference of TCL, Toyota, Samsung, Intel, and Taiwan Excellence. I also attended the Showstopper Launchit event.

On Tuesday and Wednesday, I visited and talked to many companies at CES.

This year’s CES continued several trends from last year, and brought them up to a new level. The CES 2019 key trends include: OLED, Quantum Dot, Micro LED, Sensors Plus AI (Artificial Intelligence), etc.

In the Quantum Dot Market 2018 report, 5th edition, Touch Display Research forecasts the global quantum dot market will reach $16.6 billion by 2028.  What is the new quantum dot progress at CES 2019?

In the Micro LED 2018 to 2028 Report, all the methods to fabricate micro and mini LED displays along with their supply chains are analyzed and put into 15 method categories. Which new companies are showing micro LED at CES 2019?

What is TCL’s new strategy for 2019? What is Samsung’s new strategy for 2019?

Which startup companies are showing promising new technologies?

All these will be covered in the upcoming Touch and Emerging Display monthly report, CES 2019 special report next week.

USA Today quoted Touch Display Research about Apple iPhone X flexible OLED display

September 29, 2017.  By Jennifer Colegrove Ph.D., Touch Display Research Inc.

USA Today published an article about “Why you’ll need to wait seven weeks for iPhone X to go on sale”, the authors are Mr. Jon Swartz and Mr. Mike Snider. The article quoted Touch Display Research about OLED market and how Apple used the flexible OLED.

“Samsung and LG alone plan to invest about $20 billion in OLED production in the next few years, and Apple will likely make its own investments, says Jennifer Colegrove, principal analyst at Touch Display Research in Santa Clara, Calif.”

“The display for Apple’s iPhone X uses a flexible OLED display so that it can bend at the edges, helping increase the functional screen to more than 90%.”

As we forecasted about 2 years ago, in the “Touch and Emerging Display December 2015 report”, also in the CNBC article by Anita Balakrishnan which quoted Touch Display Research, “Touch Display Research forecasted Apple will adopt AMOLED for iPhone in 2017/2018 time frame. The current global AMOLED capacity is not enough to support Apple iPhone. That’s why we estimate the adoption to occur in the 2017/2018 time frame. Touch Display Research believes the investment on OLED fab-capacity-expansion from LG and Samsung will soon materialize.”

Now our forecast became reality. Sorry about tooting our own horn, but these are the facts. We are good at forecast.

Kodak touch sensor after UniPixel

July 15, 2015

I recently had a chance to interview Kodak’s VP of Functional Printing group, Mr. Brian Marks. Mr. Marks indicated Kodak is currently working on two metal mesh technologies: 1. Silver metal mesh, and 2. Copper metal mesh.

As we covered before in Touch and Emerging Display monthly report, UniPixel bought the Atmel’s XSense business and facility in Colorado in April 2015.

On April 27, 2015, Kodak announced it is committed to moving forward independently with development of copper mesh touch sensor technology, following UniPixel’s decision to withdraw from joint activities with Kodak.

“We are pleased to have full control over the technology development program and excited about the business opportunities ahead. We expect to have products based on this technology in the market before the end of this year,” said Philip Cullimore, President – Enterprise Inkjet Systems Division and Micro 3D Printing & Packaging Division.

UniPixel and Kodak signed partnership agreement back in 2013. But after about 2 years, the partnership broke up.

In the recently published “ITO-replacement: non-ITO transparent conductor technologies and market forecast 2015 report“, Touch Display Research forecast the non-ITO transparent conductor market will have rapid growth and reach $10.9 billion in 2022.
